I have the honour to transmit for your
information a copy of a letter from the Director of Public
Works together with an indent in duplicate for a set of pumping
engines which it is proposed, on the advice of Mr. Chadwick,
to erect at Tytam Tuk with a view to increasing the Water Sup-
ply of the City of Victoria.

The Water Supply of Hongkong is becoming
a question of considerable urgency, and in forwarding this
indent to you I have the honour to request, should the pro-
posed scheme meet with your approval, that you will instruct
the Crown Agents to take such measures as may be necessary in
order that the work may be carried out with the least possible
delay.

A gathering ground.
This will at least double the amount supply from Tytam, but will necessitate
pumping up to the tunnel which conveys water to the high-level
Engines, while Mr Chadwick's indent is based specifically on this.
I gather that the necessary surveys are already in operation.
