Improvement of Gas Lighting. Decrease $1,500. No provision has been made for this item as the work has been completed, and when any new lamps are added, they are fitted with the incandescent burners.
Maintenance of Waterworks, City and Hill District. Increase $4,000. Great extensions have taken place in the higher levels of the City and additions have been made to the pumping machinery which involve an increase of expenditure. In 1900, a sum of $20,493 was expended under this heading.
Maintenance of Waterworks, Kowloon. Increase $3,000. This is attributable to the large extensions taking place in Kowloon.
Maintenance of Waterworks, Aberdeen. Decrease $500. This vote has proved to be in excess of requirements in past years and I have accordingly reduced it.
Waterworks Miscellaneous. Decrease $2,000. The expenditure under this heading is a very variable amount, and so far as I can foresee, there will be no large works to be undertaken next year chargeable against it. In 1900 the expenditure was only $1,731 as against $9,994 in the preceding year.
Water Account. Increase $5,000. The expenditure under this heading was $3,979 in 1899 and $10,987 in 1900 and the Vote has again been found inadequate this year.
