NEG.

Hongkong, 20th March, 1902.

376

With reference to Sir Henry Blake's Despatch No. 442 of the 26th October and your reply No. 2 of the 3rd January last, I have the honour to transmit for your favourable consideration the enclosed copy of a letter addressed to the Acting Captain Superintendent of Police by all the seconded Marines now serving in the Police Force of this Colony, in which they apply to be discharged from the Royal Marines in order that they may be permanently attached to the Police.

3.

I also transmit a copy of Mr. Badeley's covering letter, in which he strongly recommended the Government to view the application with favour.

As I concur in Mr. Badeley's view that the Police Service will benefit by the permanent engagement of the seconded Marines, who have hitherto given satisfaction, I recommend that the application be granted.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,

&c. &c.

Your most obedient

Humble servant,

M.J. Gascoigne

Major-General,

Administering the Government.
