I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 431 of December 20th last relative to the proposal to make additional appointments in this Colony with a view to the more efficient carrying-out of the quarantine regulations.
2. As suggested in that Despatch, I have directed the Medical Officers of the Colony, in consultation with Professor Simpson, to reconsider the whole matter with a view to ascertaining what alterations of the Quarantine Rules should be made.
3. Professor Simpson states that until he has had time and opportunity to make further enquiries into questions relating to the shipping of the port, he will not be prepared to give his opinion on the larger question indicated in your Despatch under reference. He reports, however, without hesitation, that in his opinion another Health Officer of the Port will be necessary.
4. I, therefore, beg to repeat the recommendation...
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
