I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 26 of the 17th of January respecting the retirement of Sir John Carrington from the Office of Chief Justice of this Colony on the ground of ill-health. I transmit herewith the completed paper of particulars of Sir John Carrington's service, and request that should you approve of the proposed pension that the Crown Agents for the Colonies may be instructed to pay the amount thereof as it becomes due. I take leave to add an expression of my regret, which is shared by all classes in Hongkong, at the loss of Sir John Carrington's services.
