Generally, the hours of water supply to the city were reduced from four to three on the 13th January, sadly, the practice of turning it over for cleansing purposes was discontinued on the same day.
The Secretary had previously been instructed to make arrangements for obtaining supplies by water boats, and all necessary measures were taken a few days later.
By the 16th January, the reservoir had been reduced to 10,163,000 gallons and, assuming that the steps just described would have the effect of reducing the late depletion, which had hitherto amounted to over 13,000,000 gallons per week, to 2,000,000 gallons, this quantity was thought sufficient to last until the middle of April.
