The houses, which were divided by a cross wall, were left standing. The living rooms were coupled with the kitchens.

The amount of the destruction was preedrious. The adjoining houses rendered the work of rescuing any survivors very difficult.

The party wall of one of the adjoining houses fell a few days after the main disaster, notwithstanding attempts which had been made to support it by means of shoring. The front wall of the same house was pulled down in consequence of its dangerous condition, more than a week before the site of the accident was cleared of rubbish, although strong gangs were kept working at it night and day.
