that

4 subsequent passes

Rumsey's emoluments were

£600 p.a., with quarters

or an allowance in lieu thereof ( + travelling allowance, which, of course, do not count). The amount of the value of the quarters

is not stated in Form 180 but I think that we

may

let it go at £80, which is less than

½d of above.

I have the honour to transmit for your

consideration the enclosed copy of a letter from Commander

R. Murray Rumsey, Harbour Master, relative to the amount of

pension to which, in the event of his retirement from the

Public Service, he may become entitled in respect of his

period of service in the Gold Coast Colony.

2.

As a direct communication between this

Colony and the Government of Gold Coast seemed likely to necessitate further references from the Gold Coast to the Colonial

Office, and thereby involve some considerable delay which

Captain Rumsey is anxious to avoid, I considered it desirable

to refer his communication in the first instance to you. I

have, therefore the honour to request that you will be so

good as to furnish the Gold Coast Government, in transmitting

Captain Rumsey's letter to that Colony, with such further

information as to his pensionable service as to you may seem

desirable.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient

Humble servant,

M.J. Gascoigne

Major-General, Administering the Government.
