Sir,
With reference to my open despatch 22 of the 22 inst. regarding the death of Commander Hastings, I have the honour to inform you that though there are likely to be several applicants for the post of Postmaster General, I do not propose to make any recommendations at present with regard to the filling of the vacancy.
The changes in office, which may arise from the promotion of the Stewart Lockhart, render it impossible to make any definite recommendation until those changes have taken effect.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient humble Servant,
Major General.
Right Honourable
Joseph Chamberlain
Downing Street.
