expresses the opinion that it is much to be regretted that Professor Simpson cannot remain in Hongkong throughout the ensuing summer, especially as under the present arrangement his advice and experience will not be available at the time when the plague may be expected to be at its worst.

In these circumstances MR Chamberlain would be glad to be informed whether it would be possible for Prof: Simpson's post to be kept open for him for the further period suggested.

I am to ask for the favour of very early reply to this letter, as Professor Simpson will leave Hongkong on the 27th instant unless he receives telegraphic instructions not to do so.
