Sir,

In accordance with instructions contained in Despatch Circular of the 31st May, 1897, I have the honour to submit the enclosed return of all whippings inflicted in the Victoria Gaol during the year 1901.

The instrument used was the birch except when the cat-o-nine-tails was ordered.

The number of whippings ordered by the Assistant Superintendent was 11 (with the birch) while 3 were ordered (with the cat-o-nine-tails) by the same officer in conjunction with a Visiting Justice.

Discipline was well maintained.
