With regard to the position of the Medical Officer of Health

Sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No 7 of the 8th of January last, forwarding the report of a committee appointed to enquire into the adequacy of the staff of the Medical Department of Hong Kong.

2. I do not consider that there is any sufficient reason for altering the arrangements settled by Sir K. Robinson's despatch No 58 of the 5th of March 1896 and my despatch No 95 of the 5th of May of the same year.

3. With regards to the distribution of work among the members of the department, as suggested in this report, paragraph ..., I adhere to the view expressed in my despatch No 229 of the 18th of September 1895, that the P.C.M.O. should be responsible for dividing the medical duties among the Assistant Surgeons from time to time as he thinks fit.
