Now it seems to me, I have no prospects but ceaseless toil, I trust therefore that His Excellency may under the circumstances be pleased, once more to endeavour to move the Right Honourable the Secretary of State for the Colonies, to substantially increase my salary, to a degree commensurate with the enhanced and daily increasing importance of the Department, and with the usual and extraordinary labours imposed on me in resuscitating a department that had become so discredited as to require such new and unusual conditions to be imposed on the appointment of the officer charged with its rehabilitation.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant, (Sgd) W. C. H. Hastings,
Postmaster General.
