Now that I have been appointed to this heavy task, and by the terms of my appointment shown, that my later applications cannot be entertained, I earnestly hope for a more favourable reconsideration of my petition of the 29th May.

I trust that the Right Honourable the Secretary of State will acquit me of any fear of work.
In the Office. On the 9th and 2nd instant, I spent fourteen hours and a half and sixteen hours and a half on mail days.
I never tell a man to do what I would not do myself, and I do not hesitate to say, that in a large measure, on occasions of strain, the improvement is due not alone to my own physical exertions, but to the fact, that my working with the men, makes them work better, and to a limited extent, inspires a spirit of emulation.

I would therefore respectfully venture to ask His Excellency, whether in view of what has appeared in local prints, and from information that has reached him through other sources, there is not sufficient evidence of my untiring efforts to bring this Department as far as possible into a state of perfection.

As I have already stated, as far as emoluments go, now that I am substantive head of a Department, I get 20% on an average less than in the past five years when I held acting appointments.
