In 1894 the Machinery and Stores Committee recommended the following salaries for the respective offices, viz:

It is therefore not unreasonable to treat that in view of the increased work, higher pay should be allowed, as has been allowed for the combined offices in other Departments of the Service.

The following comparative statement of Revenue and Expenditure for the years 1889 and 1899 will give an idea of how the work in the Treasury has increased:

Before the passing of the Suitors' Fund Ordinance in 1896, all receipts and payments were made in the Supreme Court and the Registrar had the custody of all jewels and valuable properties of deceased persons; but transferred to the Treasury without any additional assistance or extra staff, though that office has to keep the same set of books as those kept in the Court.

The total receipts in connection with the above Fund for last year were $228,000, while the payments were $242,762.

While grateful for the increased salary allowed, which is the same as that fixed for my predecessor eight years ago, I cannot help feeling that as an officer of the Treasury
