for pension purposes.

The fact that he will during part of his leave or even on retirement be working on the Ordinances will not entitle him to count the period since we have laid down in regard to that work done while an officer is on leave that the period must, generally speaking, count as leave of absence on half pay for future leave or for pension purposes.

I think we must let him remain on leave till 31 March & give as our reason that a despatch from the Governor received since our letter was written shows that there has been a misunderstanding; but we can lay down the right position as in the first Johnson's Minute to fill up the flagging particulars as from the 31st of March.

I have the honour to acknowledge your letter No. 43442/1901 of the 17th instant having reference to my retirement from the office of Chief Justice of Hongkong.

2. The decision on the matter of the grant conveyed in your letter is one of considerable importance in respect of my pension during the ensuing year, namely, by quarter of my pension during that time, and also in respect of my pension. There are, I think, some considerations.
