Enough medical certificate of the cold ever greention in the certificate & we wish to know imperfection of the weather or not Sir J. Pope Hennessy Say that he should be physically punished from the colony the Chamberlain consider that he should retire on pension at the expiration of his present leave i.e. the 31st March next.

Mr. Lucas,

C.Pd. 12 Sec.

The only objection to your proposal is that the medical cert. hardly complies with the requirement of the Pension Minute that it should state "that he is incapable by reason of some infirmity of mind or body of discharging the duties of his office, and that such infirmity is likely to be permanent."

What are we to say as to the ground of his retirement when writing? Ought we to refer to the West Indian Colonies which he has served?

C.Pd. 13.

After speaking to Mr. Johnson we agree to call upon him to retire from 31st inst.

I wish to acknowledge by the Secretary of State for the Colonies of the following letter.

2. My present medical certificate expires on leave of absence on the 31st March next.

On the 29th May following I attain the age of 55 years and it is my intention to resign my office of Chief Justice of Hong Kong and retire on pension at that date. It is obvious that, according to present arrangements, I shall have to return to Hong Kong and discharge the duties of my office for something over eight weeks in April and May next.

The Secretary of State for the Colonies,

Downing Street, S.W.
