re Hong Kong appointment.
After an interview with the Postmaster General of Hong Kong, re appointment, both Mr. Martin and I beg leave to withdraw our applications on the ground of insufficiency of salary.
The cost of living we find would be 50 per cent. more than in this country and the increase in wages would hardly cover that; reckoning our emoluments we come to the conclusion that we should not be improving our position by accepting the appointment.
We are both pleased with our interview with the Postmaster General of Hong Kong and regret that he is not to be our chief, but we feel that it would be useless to go thousand of miles away to find ourselves holding superior appointment at an inferior salary.
