It is undeniable that Messrs. Benson and Martini should take an early opportunity of communicating with him, if they desire to do so.

2. I am glad that Commander Hastings has expressed his willingness to meet these gentlemen at this Office at their wish, on the 2nd or on a 3rd from August. Mr. Chamberlain would be glad to be informed if they can attend there on either of the days named, so that Commander Hastings may be informed.

It is possible that this may be done as soon as possible, either by the Office or by individual post.

Mr. Benson, one of the candidates, will call at C.O. on Friday at noon to see Commander Hastings.

(Minutes.) They both called here on the 2nd, and saw Commander Hastings. Mr. Benson is unfavourable, and told us that he thought he should not be kindly treated by taking it, and therefore should decline. Mr. Martini seemed likely to accept.
