Sir,

I am directed by the Comptroller and Auditor General to acknowledge the receipt of your letter, No 13/10, of the 16th ultimo, enclosing a memorandum on the subject of the method of accounting for Expenditure on Materials and Stores for Public Works, and stating that the Governor has approved of a nominal Vote of $100 for "Public Works Materials and Stores" being included in the Estimates for 1898.

2. The Comptroller and Auditor General learns with satisfaction that steps are now being taken to place these Accounts on a correct basis, and I am to transmit, for your information and guidance, the enclosed memorandum relating to the scheme explained to you when you were in this country, which it is now proposed to adopt in Hong Kong.
