With reference to your letter of the 23rd

ultimo, 16805/1901, relative to certain land for a new

battery at Hong Kong, I am directed by the Secretary of

State for War to acquaint you, for the information of

Mr Secretary Chamberlain, that the battery referred to in

paragraph 2 of your letter as West Point Battery was

included in the list which accompanied War Office

letter dated 26th February, 1897, Hong Kong 5/3007/97,

under the name of Belcher Point Lower Battery, Emplace-

ments for two 12 pr: Q.F.guns.

2. It was subsequently decided to place the guns

outside Belcher Point Battery, and the site now in

question was selected as the most suitable for defence

purposes. It was suggested by the station that the name

West Point Battery should be used, but it has been

finally decided to adopt the title of Belcher Quarry

Battery.

3. With reference to paragraph 1 of your further

Bath

letter of the 17th instant, 37905/1901, I am to state

The Under Secretary of State,
