262. Your Lordship's telegram, 130. I understand that I am to gradual evacuation, irrespective of considerations mentioned in my 257. As regards Shanghai I propose to withdraw one battalion, and I would suggest, subject to views of Gascoigne, withdrawal of one battalion from Hong Kong.

133. Your telegram 262 and mine 132. Proposals approved. Report battalion withdrawn from Shanghai, and arrange with Gascoigne the battalion to be withdrawn from Hongkong. Inform Viceroy.
