14 MAY OF

Hong Kong: West point Battery. Forwarding plan showing

area taken over from Colonial Government.

War Office letter Hong Kong 8/88, dated 25th July 1900.

From the General Officer Commanding Troops in China.

To the Under Secretary of State for War, War Office.

Sir,

Jets local cor- ndence: 1 tracing.

Head Quarters,

Hong Kong,

2nd March 1901.

With reference to the above quoted War Office letter, I have the honor to forward a tracing of a portion of Crown land taken over by the War Department, also copies of correspondence with the Colonial Government on the subject.

2. I beg to remark that the price asked for the ground by the Colonial Authorities is in my opinion exorbitant. The ground mentioned as being worth six dollars a square foot, is on the sea level, and has wharfage rights and is quite worth the money for business purposes.

3. The ground in question, however, is some hundreds of feet above the sea, and of no possible use for business purposes. The nearest residential house on the same road is over 600 yards distant, and I cannot think that such a price should be asked for what is practically waste land.
