tion proposed to be constructed by the Hong Kong & Whampoa

I am now to state that My Lords are willing to
accept the compromise proposed by Mr W. Keswick, M.P. in
his letter of 16th February last, a copy of which
6358 accompanied your letter of the 28th February 1901, viz:-
That H.M. Ships should at other times than during periods of
War or when war is considered threatening, be docked in
the ordinary course of rotation, but that if for any other
reason the docking of one of H.M. Ships is considered a
matter of urgent necessity the Company will promptly comply
with a notice from the Governor of the Colony to that
effect.
Under Secretary of State,
UP COLONIAL OFFICE.
