Your salary will be converted into dollars at the rate of exchange, which will be fixed annually by the Treasury, and will be based on the average exchange value of the dollar during the preceding twelve months.
1. You will be provided with free quarters.
2. You will be required, if appointed, to give security to the extent of £... in respect of the pecuniary responsibility attaching to your office.
b. It is to be understood that your engagement is for not more than three years from the date of your arrival in the Colony; and that, if it is established to the satisfaction of the Governor that you are not qualified for efficient service there, the Governor, subject to the confirmation of the Secretary of State, will have full power to cancel your appointment at any time within the said three years without giving you any further compensation than a passage back to England, which will be granted only if the Governor is satisfied that you have, by your good conduct, deserved it.
Unless previously terminated, the appointment will cease at the end of the said three years, unless it be expressly continued. If it is continued, on the fixed establishment of the Colony, with salary at the rate of £160 a year.
It is also to be understood that your services, after satisfactory completion of 3 years' probation, will be counted for any duties upon which the Governor, in the interest of the public service, may think it desirable to employ you, and that it will be within his discretion to station you wherever he may consider that your presence will be most useful.
It will be necessary for you to express your acceptance of the conditions stated in the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs of this letter before your appointment is confirmed.
