I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 367 of the 31st October, relative to the salary of Mr. R. H. Craig, Assistant Superintendent of Victoria Gaol.
2. In reply to paragraph 2 of that Despatch, I have the honour to inform you that Mr. Craig's name was intentionally omitted from the Classification therein referred to, as he was the Assistant Head of a Department and therefore did not fall within the scope of the Committee's enquiries.
3. Another officer who was similarly omitted from the scheme was the Superintendent of Accounts, Correspondence and Stores in the Public Works Department. His name was originally included in the Classification Scheme but withdrawn at the desire of the Director of Public Works, who was of opinion that Mr. Wood's duties were such as to preclude him from being considered a subordinate officer for the purposes of the Classification.
I have the honour to be, sir,
Your most obedient
Humble servant,
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.
Governor, &c..
