Experiments made to ascertain the inflammability of oil of 150° Fahrenheit flashing point (close test). The experiments were made on an oil so prepared that it had a flashing point of 140° Fahrenheit (close test).

A gas-flame 3/4 inch long by 1/4 inch broad was allowed to play into two ounces of the oil. The oil did not burn (the gas-flame having previously been removed) until the gas-flame had been in contact with the oil for five minutes.

Lighted matches and red-hot cinders placed in the oil were at once extinguished.
3.
Red-hot cinders placed on the oil spilt on the ground caused ignition at the point of contact only. The cinders in contact with the oil burnt like a piece of lamp-wick and were easily extinguished.
