Kowloon Water Works. Gravitation Scheme.
We have the honour to submit Plans (4 Sheets) Specification and Bills of Quantities for the main Dam (Site No.1) Byewash Dam, Bungalow and Road Diversion in above scheme.
The specification is incomplete, the printed general conditions being with the Crown Solicitor for revision. We estimate the cost of these works, including material to be obtained from home at $505,000.00
In regard to the estimated cost of the complete scheme we submit that, in view of the present rapid growth of the population of Kowloon Peninsula it would be advisable to lay out the works to give a supply of at least 1,000,000 gallons a day,
The present requirements on the basis of the census returns recently published are 800,000 gallons a day, and if the population should increase during the next four years as it has increased during the last four years, there will be required in 1905 at least 300,000 gallons a day.
The Reservoir now proposed with a small catchwater near the Byewash Dam will supply 775,000 gallons a day and the Cheung Sha Wan intakes 100,000 gallons a day, so that by the time these works are completed they will give a supply of only 75,000 gallons a day in excess of the estimated demand. We do not consider this supply sufficient and advise that to give an adequate surplus the drainage area of the Reservoir it is now proposed to construct be extended by a catchwater intercepting the water from the Northern slopes of the Kowloon Range. An area of 400 acres so intercepted would give an additional supply of about 700,000 gallons a day, which is all that is justified by the size of the Reservoir. We have made an examination of the ground and have no doubt that this can be done.
