389 years. The Postmaster General recommended a salary of $540. from the 1st July and $600. from 1st January 1902 with permission to rise to the maximum salary fixed for officers of the same class in Hongkong. The Governor approved this recommendation.

(8) On the recommendation of the Acting Postmaster General and the Colonial Treasurer, an increase of $15. a month was given by His Excellency to the British Postal Agents at Canton, Swatow & Amoy, at which offices the work has increased.
(9) SECOND ASSISTANT, CANTON: His Britannic Majesty's Consul General at Canton reported on the 10th January 1901: "The pressure on the present staff consisting of Mr G. T. Pearson, The Assistant of his consulate, and Mr Ssu-tu, one of the Linguists of this Consulate, has for the past seven months been extreme". The Acting Postmaster General reports that the sale of stamps at Canton shows an increase of $4000. in 1900 over that of 1899. The creation of the new post was approved by the Governor.
(10) ASSISTANT, AMOY. The Postal Agent at Amoy strongly recommended this increase. The Acting Postmaster General and Treasurer recommended that the Assistant should be placed on the same salary as those holding similar posts at Canton and Fuchow, viz:- $300. a year which was approved.
