No. 442.
Sir,
41679T 340
Government House,
Hongkong, 26th October, 1901.
With reference to the engagement of the 40 Marines by the Crown Agents for the Colonies to act as Constables in this Colony, I have the honour to enclose herewith a copy of a minute by the Acting Captain Superintendent of Police.
2.
From this minute you will observe that these men, who have given complete satisfaction, now wish to join the Gaol Staff permanently on condition that they may be granted their discharges; that their service in the Police may count as resident service for leave purposes and that their service may also count as service for the purpose of triennial increments.
3.
I recommend that these men be allowed to join the Gaol Staff permanently on the terms suggested and if you approve, I have to request that you will be good enough to take the necessary steps to obtain their discharges.
Right Honourable
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN,

I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient
humble servant,
Governor, &c.
