In continuation of my despatch No.342 of the 2nd ultimo, I have the honour to transmit to you for the information of the bacteriologist the enclosed copy of a letter from the Acting Colonial Secretary of the Straits Settlements forwarding a list of the necessary apparatus for a bacteriological laboratory.
2. With regard to paragraph 3 of my despatch under reference, I have to inform you that no provision has been made in next year's Estimates for a bacteriologist as your sanction had not been received at the time when the supply bill was passed.

The Governor estimates this general balance at $388,000.
The estimated surplus for 1902 is $47,000 only; but this amount will clearly be exceeded by the cost of the laboratory and the salary of the bacteriologist, his passage, &c. The only item is a vote of $10,000 out of $30,000 for the Institute in the 1902 Estimates.
