the tax upon food.

It is proposed to continue for the present the lease of

the Slaughter houses at Kowloon and in the villages.

With regard to the additional Inspector of Nuisances at

Kowloon it is proposed at present to pay the Police Officer

in charge of Kowloon City (which is in that portion of the

New Territory within the jurisdiction of the Sanitary Board)

the sum of $15 a month for sanitary duties, as has hitherto

been done in the villages of Shaukiwan, Aberdeen and Stanley.

The two foremen of Street Cleansers required for Kowloon

are Portuguese or Indians at $25 a month each rising to $30,

and their duties are to superintend the work of the Scavenging

coolies, which has now become more important owing to the

great increase in the population of Kowloon during the past

few years. Similar foremen have been employed for years past

in the Health Districts of the City.

4.

The proposed increase in the wages of the Engineer and

stoker at the Disinfecting Station is occasioned by the gener-

al rise in wages throughout the Colony.
