RECO

REG! 20 JCT 01

From the General Officer Commanding Troops in China, 16 June

Freelleasy the Governor of Hongkong.”

Your Excellency,

Head Quarters,

Hongkong, 22nd. June, 1901.

3.

I have the honour to acknowledge the

receipt of Your Excellency's letter No.113/4 dated 18th. June, 1901.

Pending the decision of the Home Authorities on the important question raised in your Despatches No. 180 of 8th May, 1901, and No.194 of 30th May, 1901, it will obviously be impossible to adjust the terms upon which the transfer of land between the Colonial Government and War Department can be affected.

In the meantime Your Excellency will no

doubt agree with me that the construction of new defence works should in no way be delayed,

I have etc., (sgd.) W. J. Gascoigne, Major-General,

Commanding Troops in China.
