Victoria Gaol,
Hongkong, 3rd September 1901
Sir,
Sub-Enclosure 1 to Enclosure 1.
C.O.
37116
I have the honour to apply for an increase of salary.
I was appointed Assistant Superintendent of the Victoria Gaol on the 13th May, 1899, at a salary of $2,400 per annum rising to $3,000 by triennial increments of $300.
Owing to the increased cost of living during the past few years the Right Honourable the Secretary of State has, on the recommendation of His Excellency the Governor, granted an augmentation of salary to the whole of the Hongkong Civil Service (myself excepted) ranging from 17 to 80%.
I respectfully submit that the increased cost of living affects me equally as much as it does others and I trust you will see your way to recommend me for the same consideration.
I have etc.,
(sgd.) R. H. Craig,
Asst. Superintendent.
The Honourable
J. S. MacDonald, C.M.G.,
Superintendent, Victoria Gaol.
