The Honourable the Acting Director of Public Works and
The Principal Civil Medical Officer.
RED 14 OCT OF Hon. Col. Secy.
In order to render the Government Civil Hospital more in accord with modern practice we recommend the construction of a New Operating Theatre on the site proposed in the Principal Civil Medical Officer's letter of 24th ultimo.
Great advances in the last decade have been made in aseptic surgery and the operating theatres at the London Hospitals and in Europe generally have been practically remodelled.
What is required is an operating theatre with "terrazzo" floor, walls to be tiled or made of some smooth impermeable material such as Parian cement, and the roof to be of glass, a shade will also be required for the roof.
Electric light fittings will be required and these can be adapted in connection with the Electric light installation to be instituted next year.
An electric "fan-extractor" will also be wanted, to withdraw all foul (septic) air.
We would suggest that the Crown Agents obtain from the Chairman of the London Hospital, Sydney Holland, Esq., an estimate of the cost of the new Operating Theatre there, the one referred to is off Victor Ward, Dr. Herman's, which Dr. Atkinson saw when at home on leave.
This theatre is more adapted to our requirements we do not need a large one.
