Enclosure No.6 of H. E. the Governor's Despatch No.329.

of the 23rd August, 1901

İR

law 27 SEP 01 Copy of a joint report by the Honourable the Captain Superintendent of Police and the Acting Commandant, Hongkong Volunteer Corps,

Hon. Colonial Secretary.

181

We recommend that an Armourer Sergeant be obtained

for the Volunteers and Police.

We are of opinion that a salary of $1,800 per annum and free quarters must be offered.

The Volunteer Corps and the Police have no quarters to spare at present. Provision should be made for the man in the new Volunteer Head Quarters.

In the meantime he should get a house allowance of $45 a month unless the Military Authorities can accommodate him temporarily.

Provision should if possible be made in 1902 Estimates for the post.

The Police Department should pay $75 a month towards the salary. This can be done next year out of lapsing salaries without now disturbing the Estimates.
