REC 119

C. O. 33924

27 SEP OF!

Hongkong, 17th August, 1901.

Sir,

I have the honour after thirty years' faithful and devoted service to approach you on the subject of my position, consequent upon the retirement shortly of the present Chief Justice of Hongkong, His Honour Sir John W. Carrington.

2. My services, until the time of my promotion from the Straits Settlements to this Colony in September, 1895, are, I believe, fully known and duly recorded.

3. From the time of my assumption of duty in this Colony, in January, 1896, until the present, I have never ceased, in the various positions I hold, devoting the whole of my energies to the best interests of the Public Service. In this, I believe, without going into details, I shall be supported by His Majesty the King's present representative in this Colony.

4. Apart from official duties, when in or out of office, I have devoted my spare time for the last 21 years

The Right Honourable Joseph Chamberlain, M.P.

His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies
