Supreme Court,
Hongkong, 13th August, 1901.
Sir,
Having, to my sincere regret, been informed by
Sir John Carrington, that the state of his health will
necessitate his retirement I have the honour to apply for
the post of Chief Justice in Hongkong. I was appointed
Police Magistrate here on 1st January, 1884; Registrar of
the Supreme Court (with its accompanying offices) in
September, 1892 and Puisne Judge in September, 1895. Before
being appointed to the substantive post of Registrar of the
Supreme Court I frequently held the acting appointment and
in the same way before being appointed Puisne Judge I
frequently acted as such. In fact I have served as Puisne
Judge in Hongkong for more than seven years. In addition I
held the position of Acting Attorney General for some months
in 1885. At the present time I am acting as Chief Justice
during the absence of Sir John Carrington.
During the above periods I have served under the
following Governors and Officers Administering the Govern-
ment:
Sir William Marsh, K.C.M.G.
His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State
for the Colonies.
