Sir,
With reference to your Despatch of the 5th ultimo and my telegram of the 6th inst. I have the honour to inform you that after consultation with Major Chatham, acting as Director of Public Works, I do not feel justified in recommending that Mr. Gray should be appointed to the important duties of Superintendent of Crown Lands. He is dilatory in the performance of his work, and the duties of the proposed office must be very promptly performed.
I have therefore requested that the appointment shall be made as suggested in my despatch of the 30th April last.
