I have to acknowledge the receipt

of your letter of the 17th instant and in reply thereto I have very much pleasure

in stating that Mr W. Chatham has been an Assistant in my office for rather more than 5 years.

He was introduced to me by Mr James Forrest of the Institution and engaged him mainly on the recommendation of Messrs Thomas Meik & Sons of Edinburgh and of Mr. Robert Jamieson, Town and Harbour Clerk of Bo'ness; Mr Chatham having for some years acted as Resident Engineer under the Commissioners of that town.

Mr. Chatham is leaving me only because the Dock Committee of the Council of this city have finished certain heavy works, all of which Mr. Chatham, whilst here, has taken
