the advantage of being able to read and write English. I beg, however, to recommend that the Office Boy be made Registration Shroff at $15.00 per month as I cannot 'spare' the Money Order Shroff; he knows his work so intimately; and in order not to create disappointment at this promotion, as it would be an anomaly for the Money Order Shroff doing more onerous work in charge of cash drawing less pay, that his salary be also increased to $15.
The extra $2.00 would be met by the promotion of the No.2 Office Boy to become No.1 Office Boy at $10.00 per month instead of $12.00; but his maximum pay, as an incentive to better himself for the post (he is quite a young man and very intelligent) should be $12.00 rising to that figure every year by $1.00 per month.
The No.3 Office Boy, on probation at $9.00, is unsatisfactory in his knowledge of English, and I am unable to get a more intelligent class of Chinaman at a lower scale than $12.00. At this rate I got a satisfactory marine stamper whom, but for the exigency of sorting on board the P & O. Mails, I would like to retain on office duty.
