The farmer provides the staff i.e. shroff, tallymen and scavengers, at the Slaughter Houses at his own expense for the purpose of checking the number of beasts killed and of keeping the Slaughter Houses clean.
There are two Slaughter houses:-
(a). At West Point and
(b). At Hunghom.
The Government lets out the right of slaughtering for the whole Colony to one man as lessee, and he makes his own arrangements as to sub-letting etc.
There are only the above two Government Slaughter houses, but, in the out villages, such as Shaukiwan, the said lessee sometimes hires a shed for slaughtering and charges fees for the same.
The following statement of accounts will show that, if the scheme which has been suggested by the Superintendent of Police and the Colonial Veterinary Surgeon, is carried out, namely, the scheme for the transfer of slaughter houses from the Government lessee to the Sanitary Board, the Government may expect to receive as revenue about $1,000 a year on a reduced scale of fees more than it does at present, whilst a single combined fee being charged under such scheme for depots and Slaughter houses should tend in favour of cheaper food.
