resigned his duties as Police Magistrate, for which

he continues to draw a salary of $1,200 per annum,

and when, on the 19th December 1900, Mr. Hallifax was

appointed Assistant Superintendent of Police, he was

allowed a salary of $2,700 for the discharge of his

Police duties. The total yearly salary of Mr. Hallifax

at the present time is therefore $3,900.

This salary does not involve any increase in the

estimates for the current year, which

have already received your approval.

Mr. Hallifax lives in what for several months of the year is a very bad climate.

He has much travelling to do in a very rough

country and he has to spend many nights at the various

Police Stations as he cannot return to Taipo within

the day. A man less physically strong could not do

the work, and I am therefore of opinion that the pay

of Mr. Hallifax should not be reduced and that he

should be permitted to draw the first of his triennial

increments of salary with effect from the 29th or last
