No.148.
Sir,
Government House,
Hongkong, 8th July, 1901.
I have the honour to revert to paragraph 20 of enclosure No.1 in my despatch No.474 of the 8th of last October, respecting the pay of Mr. Hallifax as Assistant Superintendent of Police.
The pay of one Assistant Superintendent of Police was placed at $3,100 on the Estimates for the present year, because, as reported in my despatch No.180 of the 19th March, 1900, Mr. Hallifax had drawn ever since October, 1899, a salary of $1,500 as Cadet with an additional salary of $1,200 as Acting Police Magistrate in the New Territory, and it was felt that in case he gave up the latter duties and devoted the whole of his time to the Police Department, he should not be compelled to incur a loss of salary thereby.
Mr. Hallifax has not, however, resigned
THE RIGHT HONORABLE
JOSKET CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
