With reference to your letter No.1003 of the 5th instant, enquiring as to the practice of the Government of the Straits Settlements with regard to the question of exempting Military Officers who occupy rateable tenements from the payment of rates and taxes : I am directed to inform you that no such exemption is granted in the Straits Settlements, and to forward a copy of Section ... of the Municipal Ordinance 18... which lays down all the exemptions to the rule as to payment of rates.
