I have the honour to point out that additional assistance is now absolutely necessary in the Accounting Branch of this Department.
In doing so, I have to state that I have a number of Assistants, as you are aware, and the extent and importance of the accounting work has vastly increased, especially of late. I find it impossible to continue to carry on even with long hours (and at times on Sundays) with the present staff, to do the work properly.
I require at least one additional assistance, which is as follows: - Messrs I. G. Gutierrez ($1440 per annum), A. M. Souza ($660 per annum), and ($360 p. ann.).
To give you an idea of the increase of work, I beg to place before you the following table of figures of accounts treated in the books, and forms of the office and Treasury:
