Sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your Despatch of 7th instant, respecting the presence of a British Officer at the trial of Extradition prisoners.

I have written to His Excellency the Viceroy expressing the appreciation of His Excellency the Governor of the readiness with which sanction has been granted to the proposed measure, and stating that the persons named in your Despatch are ready for extradition; and I shall depute a Consular Officer to be present at the trial of the men in Canton.

I enclose herewith as requested copy of my Despatch to the Viceroy applying for sanction to the arrangement in question, and translation of His Excellency's reply.
