I have the honour to report that Mr. E.

Abbott, an increase to whose salary had been approved by your

Despatch No. 121 of the 12th. ultimo, died in the Goverment

Civil Hospital on 22nd. April last, as notified in the en-

closed copy of a letter from the Acting Principal Civil

Medical Officer.

2.

On the 9th. instant, I telegraphed to you

asking you to select and appoint a new Vardmaster at a salary

of 1866 per annum rising to $1,046 per annum.

3.

This Officer is required to act as Vard-

master at the Kennedy Town Hospital, and I have filled up the

post of Assistant Wardmaster at the Lunatic Asylum, vacated by

Mr. Abbett's death, by the mppointment of a Chinese, Tong Po

at a salary of $20 a month.

4.

I shall not enter in the 1902 Estimates

the increased rate of salary sanctioned før the late Mr.

Abbett as Assistant Wardmaster at the Lunatic Asylum, but

shall retain the present salary on these Estimates to enable

ms to engage any suitable European wke nay present himself.
