sir,
I have the honour to enclose for
your information a copy of an address presented to me by
a deputation from a number of Cantonese Medical Students
who with a large number of Cantonese, found themselves
unable to escape from Tientsin on the outbreak of the
Boxer disturbances last year.
2.
I was approached by some Chinese
gentlemen here, who were prepared to give Ten Thousand
Dollars to assist in the repatriation of the Cantonese,
I telegraphed to His Majesty's Consul at Tientsin guaran
teeing that mount and Mr. Carles was kind enough to
assist the Medical Students and other Cantonese in their
escape from Tientsin. The mount expended being repaid
by the Chinese gentlemen who had approached me on the
subject. The deputation shows that they are not ungrate~
ful.
I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your most obedient
Humble servant,
Henny, Asthahe
Governor, 800..
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.
