I have the honour to transmit for your consi-

deration the enclosed copy of a letter from the Acting Direct-

or of Public Works, recommending the appointment of a Principal

Land Surveyor to conduct the work of the Land Branch in his

Department.

2. I agree with Mr. Chatham that the appointment

of such an officer is necessary, and, should you concur in that

opinion, I shall be glad if you will be good enough to consult

the Crown Agents with a view to selecting a suitable candidate.

3. The salary suggested by Mr. Chatham is $200

month with exchange compensation, but it may be necessary to

offer better terms, and in that case I leave the matter open

for your decision.
